Winter Arts & Naturalist Weekend
Feburary 17-19th, 2017 / Pine Mountain Settlement School

Join us for a family-friendly weekend of hiking and bird walks, weaving on an antique loom and making corn shuck dolls. You can also enjoy the art of folk dancing and storytelling. The weekend includes home-cooked Appalachian style meals beginning with dinner at 6 pm on Friday and ending with lunch on Sunday, 2 nights lodging, and all program.

Cost is $225 for an adult and $125 for children ages 6-12. Children age 5 and under are free. For more information or registration click here.

Wilderness First Aid
Feburary 17-19th, 2017 / Pine Mountain Settlement School

Wilderness First Aid (WFA) is the perfect course for the outdoor enthusiast or trip leader who wants a basic level of first aid training for short trips with family, friends, and outdoor groups. It also meets the American Camp Association guidelines. Students must be 14 years of age or older to participate. The WFA is 16 hours long (two days), and focuses on the basic skills of: Response and Assessment, Musculoskeletal Injuries, Environmental Emergencies, Survival Skills, Soft Tissue Injuries, and Medical Emergencies. $200 includes tuition, meals, and lodging. Additional $35 if you register to take the CPR certification.

Harlan County Run With Color
April 9th, 2017 / Downtown Harlan

This is Harlan County's most colorful and fun run of the year! The runners/walkers in this just-for-fun race will traverse downtown Harlan while getting plastered with liquid color and paint powder! The 5k course is mostly flat and family friendly!

It's Good 2 Be Young In The Mountains
April 21-23rd, 2017 / SKCTC Cumberland Campus, 700 College Road, Cumberland, KY

It's Good 2 Be Young In The Mountains is a three day event happening April 21-23, 2017 in Cumberland, Kentucky. IG2BYITM is a conference that feels like a festival and will host a range of conversations, artists, musicians and young people from across Appalachia and the nation.

Tadpole Derby on Looney Creek Trail
May 7th, 2016 / Black Bear Gazebo on Main St in Cumberland, KY

Get a jump on spring and ride the Tadpole Derby along the Loonery creek Trail. This event is planned as a casual and fun ride. The distance of the ride is about 5 miles, from the Black Bear Gazebo to the Benham Park and back. The ride will be at a leisurly pace and easy enough for any skill level. Tour De Kingdom Come
May 20th, 2017 / Kingdom Come State Park

This 36-mile race bgeins and ends at Kingdom Come State Park Lake. Don't have a bike? Then come out and watch as riders attempt the final climb up to the park! Awards for each age division, fastest male and female will receive special awards. Every rider who finishes the final clum in under 17 minutes will earna special polka dot t-shirt. This is round one of the Eastern KYVA Cycling Rally Circuit.

Poke Sallet Festival

The Poke Sallet Festival is Harlan County's oldest continuous festival and also Harlan County's biggest festival! The festival always takes place on the first full weekend in June and is filled with food, contests, live music, carnival, a challenging 5k, the miss Harlan County Pageant and much more!

Black Bear 5k
July 2, 2016 / Cumberland, KY

This Independence Day weekend make sure you make your way to Cumberland for the new and improved Black Bear 5k Run! The date and location have changed but the fun has not! Runners will begin at Coal Miners Memorial Park in Benham, continue to Cumberland Elementary School, and then return to the park. Stars & Strides 5k Run/Walk
July 23rd, 2016 / Downtown Harlan, KY

Vibe 5 Race Management, Harlan County Tourism & Convention Center and Hospice Of The Bluegrass present Stars & Strides, America's 5K Freedom Run! It's fun for the entire family! Come and celebrate a day of freedom with us on Saturday July 23rd 8:30pm in downtown Harlan. This will be a timed 5K glow run on the downtown route complete with red, white and blue inflatables, paint, powder and a black light tent. Medals will be given in 10 year men and women’s age group categories. Kids 10 and under run free with a paid adult. Some restrictions apply. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Hospice Of The Bluegrass. Registration will open May 9th for only $18.00. You can register online here.

Annual Bear Crawl Obstacle Mud Run
TBA 2016 / Benham, KY

Starts at Benham Little League Field, 140 Kentucky Ave. Benham, Ky. 40807. Onsite registration begins at 7:00 a.m. and race at 9:00 a.m. Entry fee is $25.00 per person, and teams of 4 people or more get a $5.00 discount per person.

Black Bear Bike Night
Black Bear Bike Night was created for the local motorcycle enthusiasts to have an event to meet with other motorcycle enthusiasts and enjoy games, music, food and hospitality with other bikers. Since the first one in 2009 was a success it was opened to allow cars and trucks to be a part of the event as well. Many people who don't ride motorcycles come and enjoy looking at the many beautiful bikes, as well as the cars and trucks. The 2016 season dates are:

May 21
June 25
July 23

During each Bike Night, we have a motorcycle show and give out trophies for the winners of each category: Best Sports, Harley, Paint, Metric, Trike and Best of Show. To all the visitors coming into our area, you can experience the beautiful mountains and travel our winding roads. You can also check out our website for more of the attractions in the Tri-City area. So come and enjoy our 2016 season of Black Bear Bike Night. There is no registration fee.

Kentucky's Ride to the Summit

The Festival of the Mountain Masters is an award winning authentic handcraft show that displays the work of local artisans in the Southeast region. It is a wonderful festival full of great handmade items that make wonderful Christmas gifts for the whole family. There is also live entertainment, food, contests, and much more!
