Harlan County may be famous as a place where “the sun goes down about 3 in the day” but, when the clocks moved forward this weekend, it pushed our sunsets to about 7:30. After months of leaving work in the dark, it’s time to make the most of extra sunshine hours each evening. Here are 5 ways to use your “extra hour” of sun.
Go Fishing- You don’t have to hook a boat up to the truck and haul it to Tennessee to fish. Never forget that the state record largemouth bass was caught in Harlan County in a 6 acre lake by a guy who went fishing after work! Pick up your rod & reel and head out to Martins Fork Lake, Highsplint Lake, Kingdom Come State Park Lake, or your nearest riverbank. An extra hour could land you a legendary catch!
Take a Hike- Kingdom Come State Park offers 14 hiking trails that are the perfect length for a quick evening hike. Most trails are short distances but can be linked with one another for longer stretches. It’s up to you and the sun in the sky how far your extra hour can take you at Kentucky’s Highest Elevated State Park.
Play With Your Food- You’ve been inside all winter. It’s time to get outside and the Harlan County Beer Company has the perfect outdoor dining space. While they’re serving up your supper, you and the family can play lawn games and, on some evenings, move along to some live music. The outdoor space is even pet friendly so you can bring the whole family for dinner in the sun. Not only do you get to enjoy the extra hour of daylight but you save an hour of cooking and cleanup at home!
Park It- Harlan County maintains over 30 community parks spread throughout the area. Each one provides special features. Load the kids up and get in an extra hour of play. Bring your skateboard to the skate park at Dressen Park. Count your laps on the track at Burl Fee Memorial Park in Evarts. Practice running the bases at Huff Park in Harlan. You’ll also find dog parks in both Harlan and Cumberland to run out the energy they’ve been saving all winter!
Hit the Links- Toss the clubs in the trunk before you head off to work so you can stop at one of Harlan County’s three golf courses on your way home from the office. Now’s the time to perfect your game before the evening scrambles and weekend tournaments kick into high gear. Play an evening round at the Harlan Country Club, Sleepy Hollow Golf Course, or Lynch Country Club. Use the extra hour of sun to develop the golf game that will make your buddies jealous this season!
