10 Top Tips to Be the Top Dog at the Dog Days of Kentucky

Ready to relish in a day full of fun, flavor, and all things hot dogs? The Dog Days of Kentucky is barking up a storm with activities that are sure to make your tail wag and sizzle your buns! Whether you’re here for the Hot Dog Championship, the costume contests, or just to enjoy some live music, these tips will help you be the top dog at this, frankly, awesome event.

  1. Come Early and Catch the Worm (or Hot Dog!)
The early bird gets the best bite! While our vendors are grilling up plenty of hot dogs, the supply isn’t infinite. Get here early to guarantee a taste of every dog on the menu.
  2. Share the Bounty – Bring Your Pack
Don’t go solo! Bring a group of friends, and you can each snag a different hot dog. Split them up and savor a bite (or two) of each. It’s the best way to sample all the flavors without biting off more than you can chew.
  3. Be Ready to Add a New Member to the Family
Love at first sight might just happen when you meet one of the adorable pups up for adoption. Make sure you’re prepared because these doggies are looking for their forever homes.
  4. Arrive Early for the Contests
Want to strut your stuff in the Hot Dog Eating Contest or show off your dog’s dapper duds in the costume contest? Make sure to arrive at least 30 minutes early to snag your spot and calm those pre-competition jitters.
  5. Don’t Forget Your Throne – Bring a Chair or Blanket
There’s nothing like relaxing and enjoying live music after a day full of activities. Pack a chair or blanket to make sure you’re comfortable while you soak up the sounds.
  6. Hydrate to Dominate
It’s hot dog season, but it’s also summer! Keep yourself hydrated throughout the day with plenty of water. Don’t let the summer heat catch you off guard—stay cool, stay hydrated, and keep the fun rolling.
  7. Dress to Impress (And Be Comfortable!)
Whether you’re entering the costume contest or just want to look fetchin’, make sure you’re dressed in something comfortable. You’ll be walking, eating, and maybe even running, so choose wisely! Be ready to take pictures at all the photo ops around the festival too! We hear there’s going to be a hot dog over 10 ft long!
  8. Plan Your Pit Stops
With so many vendors to visit, make sure to pace yourself. Take breaks, check out the other activities, and don’t forget to enjoy the scenery between hot dogs. You will have hot dog vendors, mountain market vendors, photo ops, inflatables, foam cannon, bike fest, and more!
  9. Bring Cash for a Quick Dash
While most vendors will accept cards, having cash on hand can make transactions quicker and easier. Plus, you never know when you’ll need a few bucks to grab that last-minute treat or souvenir.
  10. Join the Hot Dog Hustle 5K
What better way to work up an appetite (or work off a few hot dogs) than by participating in the Hot Dog Hustle 5K? It’s a fun way to stay active, and there’s nothing like a little friendly competition to spice up your day.
